Hickenlooper
Governor
Re: Cameo Shooting Sports and Education Complex Mike King
Executive Director
Dear Mr. Eggleston:
The Colorado Department of Natural Resources is aware of a proposal for the development of a shooting
sports and education complex on property owned by Xcel Energy and Snowcap Coal Company, in Mesa
County. The Department of Natural Resources would like to provide Xcel Energy with this letter of support
for the development of the proposed Cameo Shooting Sports and Education Complex.
While not as populous as other counties in the State of Colorado, Mesa County is home to a large and active
community of sportsmen and women. Mesa County also hosts the state's largest banquets organized by
conservation organizations like the Colorado Mule Deer Association, Ducks Unlimited, the National Wild
Turkey Federation and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.
The area is served by the Grand Junction Regional Airport. Additional access from Interstate 70 and rail lines
makes Mesa County a destination location for tourism and business. The development of a shooting sports
and outdoor education complex at the Cameo site would provide safe recreational shooting opportunities
for Colorado residents and non -residence alike. Today more than one million youth participate in
competitive shooting sports annually. In addition to the recreational opportunities, a shooting facility of this
nature will assist Colorado Parks and Wildlife in meeting education and outreach goals while inspiring the
next generation of conservationists.
The Colorado Department of Natural Resources believes the development of a shooting sports and outdoor
education complex will not only serve the local sportsmen and women, but will attract people from across
the region.
Sincerely,
e4`
Mike King
Executive Director
Board of Land Commissioners a Division of Reclamation, Mining & Safety • Colorado Geological Survey
Oil & Gas Conservation Commission a Water Conservation Board • Division of Forestry
Division of Water Resources a Division of Parks and Wildlife
PR -6 A15-3-6 New 02/16
