OSee Appendix A (section Contouring and Earth Work) for descriptions of
methods and concepts.
Final Seed Mix
(Construction Materials Rule 3.1.10 (1), (4) and 6.3.4 (1c))
The final seed mix was selected to support the ranching operation and
provide a sustainable forage source for both livestock and wildlife. The
selected species also have been proven to perform well at stabilizing
disturbed site (Table 5). Further, the selected species in the primary seed
mix have been shown to prevent weedy species such as cheat grass (Bromus
tectorum) from becoming established. The following are recommended:
1.
Seed should be planted between September and March to take
advantage of the bimodal precipitation distribution (Figure 1).
Z.
Seed can be drilled or broadcast. Rough terrain will probably be
broadcast.
3.
Broadcast seeding rates are doubled (or more) from the drill rate.
4.
Broadcast seeded areas should be dragged, harrowed, or rafted to
incorporate seed into the soil. A dozer can also "walk" the seed in,
keeping the tracks at 90° to the fall line.
5.
Forage kochia should be broadcast in late fall through early winter on
disturbed soil of a light snow covering. Freshly harvested seed should
be used for forage kochia if possible.
6.
Alternative species are acceptable and are provided in the Table 5.
This allows substitutions when cost for some species rise or become
unavailable. The consideration of an alternative forb such as Lewis
flax is recommended.
7.
In general, with some exceptions, germination is improved with seed
that has been handled and stored properly and it has been less than
two years since harvest. One exception is Indian ricegrass
(Achnatherum hymenoides). It is suggested that fresh seed be used.
8.
Prepare the seed bed as previously suggested using proper soil
amendments, organic materials, ripping, disking, chisel plow, and
implement erosion control measures.
9.
Control grazing by fencing if needed.
101
The sources, references, and criteria for the seed mix species selection are
found in Appendix H
381 Page
Ertl, 11071-LLLc.3ilblE NI %1111 DtLY!LRNNCH
BAKINlNV11VINMINI!1LAND NUU,NIRS -W1VVv.CR1-%3RA1flN1tiVIL.C,`,.%4
