Management Summary
In summary:
1. Manage topsoil and maintain tilth to enhance viability and success of a
final reclamation.
2. Manage mining direction to control final slope and reduce cost.
3. Manage stockpiles and overburden.
4. Control weeds and seed areas in the interim.
5. Control erosion.
6. Move towards a final reclamation in orderly planned manner, restoring
unused or depleted areas incrementally and in a timely fashion.
7. Record all product removed from pit even if not sold.
8. Become familiar with the operating regulations of the State Of
Colorado.
Final Reclaim
Much of what was previously said applies to a final reclamation and Appendix
A gives a collection of methods and approaches that are applicable. Thus we
will highlight the pertinent suggestions.
Sons and Growth Medium
(Construction Materials Rule 3.1.9 (1), (3), (4), (7) - 3.1.10 (1), (4) and
6.3.4 (1c))
Topsoil and plant growth medium are in short supply due to earlier mining
(Appendix G, Table G1). Further, soil depths are naturally limited over the
Torriorthe nts- Rock outcrop (Schroeder, 2004). Thus we suggest that topsoil
on moderate slopes should average four inches, keeping in mind that it is not
effective to topsoil bedrock without sufficient overburden. Subsoil spread
over rocky waste material should be 8 to 18 inches in depth, or more if
possible. See Appendix A (section Soil Preparation and Seeding) for further
Odescriptions of methods.
35
I -)R POW IILGRAVILIlI %I TA D1,L.S(-jLRANCIf
i,i ;.EiI,Al HAS IN INV IR[..NMIN'I,ALANI) ALIU,AI C( N lAWW-GItIA] BAMNIN%IIL.COM
