Storm Water Management Plan (SWMP), September 2012 <br />GCC Energy – King Coal & King II Mines <br />2 <br /> <br />SECTION 2: FACILITY DESCRIPTION AND CONTACT INFORMATION <br />2.1 Facility Information <br />This SWMP includes two facilities, both operated by GCC Energy, LLC. Both facilities <br />are located approximately three miles south of Hesperus, Colorado on Highway 140, <br />and west approximately four miles west on County Road 120. The King Coal Mine is an <br />inactive coal mine located on the south side of the road at 4424 County Road 120. The <br />King II Mine facility is located on the north side of the road at 6473 County Road 120. <br />The King II mine began operations in 2008. Subsequently, all mining operations at the <br />King Coal Mine were shut down and all equipment was removed. Only the bath house <br />remains in use, and reclamation is in process for the rest of the facility. <br /> <br />The King II mine facility lies within the confines of the confluence of two unnamed <br />drainage basins. The drainage basin valley bottom opens into Hay Gulch, which <br />County Road 120 is located within. Hay Gulch Irrigation Ditch runs parallel to the county <br />road at both facilities, and terminates near the southeast corner of the King II Mine. <br />Access into the King II facility is reached via a compacted dirt road on the north side of <br />the county road. Industrial activities at the mine consist of underground coal mining <br />operations, coal loading/unloading facilities, coal transport, coal storage piles, a coal <br />crushing/screening operation, office and shop buildings and vehicle washing and fueling <br />areas. <br /> <br />Stormwater run-on onto the facilities is minimized through the use of permanent <br />clearwater diversion ditches installed around the perimeter of the sites. Both facilities <br />contain retention ponds and several smaller sediment traps control stormwater runoff. <br />2.2 General Location Map <br />See Attachment A: Vicinity Map <br />2.3 Site Map <br />The following areas are depicted on the Site Maps in Attachment B. <br /> <br />King Coal Mine <br />The King Coal Mine is no longer an operating mine, and consists only of reclamation <br />areas, access roads, a parking area, and the bath house. As it was while the mine was <br />operating, all on-site stormwater is directed to the retention ponds, and all run-on is <br />prevented via the diversion ditches. <br /> <br />King II Mine <br />Site Drainage <br />Figure 1 in Attachment B is a site map showing the overall drainage pattern for the site. <br />Figures 2 through 4, also in Attachment B, shows the four drainage areas within the <br />facility.
