Turkey Creek
0 TURKEY CREEK CONSERVATION DISTRICT PAGE 2
Co Noxious WEED CONTROL PROGRAM FOR PUEBLO COUNTY
sites can all lead to conditions in which noxious weeds get started without much difficulty. Below
are a few best management practices that can help avoid the establishment of noxious weed
infestations.
■ Learn how to identify noxious weed species in the field so you can spot them while
performing other land management activities.Learn how to distinguish native species from
weeds.
■ On the way to the site, avoid driving through noxious weed infested areas. Inspect vehicles
for weed seeds stuck in tire treads or mud on the vehicle and prevent them from being
carried to unaffected areas. Remember to never clean infested vehicles in weed free areas.
■ Inspect maintenance or heavy equipment for weed seeds before it enters the property.
Require that such equipment be cleaned first to remove weed seeds before being allowed
entry. Clean equipment which has been used in weed infested areas before moving it to
another area.
■ Restrict travel to established roads and trails whenever possible. Don't drive through
sensitive areas.
■ Avoid leaving piles of exposed soil in construction areas. Cover it and revegetate with
native species as soon as possible. Always use hay, straw,or mulch that has been certified
weed free.
■ Re-seed drastically disturbed areas immediately after the disturbance ends. Perennial native
grasses are especially valuable for re-seeding. Limit use of fertilizers when reseeding;their
use may favor weeds over native perennial species. Defer livestock grazing on re-seeded
areas for at least one growing season to permit desirable plants to establish.
Please contact us for assistance if a noxious weed situation arises on the property. Any questions
regarding this report or noxious weed management should be directed to our office at the following
phone number: (719) 543-8386 ext. 116.
Regards,
Bill Alt
President
TURKEY CREEK CONSERVATION DISTRICT, THE NOXIOUS WEED MANAGER FOR PUEBLO COUNTY, CO
