The following seed mixture has been used on former pits and successful as well as
recommended by the local Natural Resource Conservation Service office:
Variety Species PLS/Acre
Western Wheatgrass Rosanna 16
Switchgrass Grenville 4
Green Needlegrass Lodorm 10
Little Bluestem Pastura 7
Big Bluestem Kaw 11
Blue Grama Lovington, Hachita 3
Sideoats Grama Vaughn, Niner 9
(1)(c)(iv) Seed will be broadcast by hand or by mechanical spreader on areas that are small,
too steep, or not accessible for seed-drill operations. Seed planted by the
broadcast method shall be incorporated into the surface soil, not to exceed a depth
of 3/4 inch, by raking, harrowing or other proven method. Seeding rates will be
doubled when the seed is broadcast rather than drilled.
(1)(c)(v) All areas will be mulched unless a cover crop is planted. Planted areas will be
mulched with straw at a rate of 4000 pounds per acre. At least 50% of the mulch
by weight shall be 10 inches or more in length. The straw will be free of noxious
weeds. The straw mulch will be crimped into the soil with a mulch crimper or
with a disc plow. A disc plow can be used by setting the disc straight and
applying adequate weight to crimp the straw 4 inches into the soil.
Feedlot or barnyard manure may be used in lieu of straw mulch. The manure must
be of a type that has 60% or more, by weight, and heavy chunks 5 inches or more
in diameter. The minimum rate of application will be 20 tons per acre spread
uniformly over the area.
Mulching material shall be applied immediately before or after seeding. When
stabilizing sandy soils it will be done just prior to seeding to avoid seeding too
deep.
(1)(c)(vi) No establishment methods using trees and/or shrubs will be used.
(1)(d) The current North Fork Smoky Hill River will remain nearby the affected area
after reclamation. The river bank will not be disturbed, so no erosion issues
should occur. The access road will become an abandoned trail over time if there is
no future usage of the mining area.
(1)(e) No features such as waste rock dumps, underground mine openings, ditches,
sediment control facilities, buildings or any other features are planned to be
established, so no reclamation treatment should be needed.
Re-disturbance of previously disturbed areas, within the proposed mining
operation, will occur. The abandoned trail that accessed the former Jolly Pit#2
(reclaimed& closed pit)runs centerline thru the proposed Jolly Pit#3 area.
