as ancillary information. Not considered in this analyses were other established ranking systems, i.e.
the IUCN Red List, Bureau of Land Management's and U.S. Forest Service's lists of sensitive
species.
Because of the inherent difficulty in comprehensively locating, surveying, and mapping plant
populations, the evaluation was somewhat flexible regarding the presence/absence of documented
species occurrence within Gunnison County. That is, if a species is known to occur within regional
proximity (i.e. in surrounding counties), then the determination was slightly weighted towards the
possibility that it may also occur in Gunnison County even if it has yet to be officially identified and
documented in the County.
A likelihood of presence determination ranking system was developed for this study ranging from
"Some likelihood" to "No likelihood". Each species was designated a likelihood of onsite occurrence
and justification for the determination was explained. The ranking system developed for this study
are qualitative and intended for purely informational purposes based on best scientific judgment. The
"likelihood" definitions for the ranking system are as follows:
Some Likelihood: The project site is within the species' range and onsite habitat, substrate, and
elevation is suitable for the species. The species is thought to be more common and/or occurs in a
wider range of habitats.
Unlikely: Little possibility that a population previously undocumented in Gunnison County may
occur in the project site. Known populations occur in nearby Counties and the habitat/substrate
and elevation are substantially appropriate for the species. However, due to species rarity, it
remains very unlikely that the species would occur within the project site.
Very Unlikely: Either known species populations are not within close regional proximity (i.e.
adjacent or nearby Counties), or the habitat/substrate and/or elevation is largely inappropriate for
the species.
No Likelihood: The appropriate habitat and/or substrate and elevation does not exist on the
project site and known occurrences of the species are not within or adjacent to Gunnison County.
It is unreasonable to assume any likelihood for species occurrence onsite.
30
PAMpls\06 CO\26\06261003 MCC Refuse Pile Site Review & Permit\WorkFiles\Permit Application\2014 Revision\Exhibit 82 2014-05-
29.docx
