Horizontal alignment is consistent with the existing topography. Haulroads are
• - located on ridges whenever practicable. Switchbacks are used to traverse the
slopes when necessary to maintain an acceptable grade. The resulting horizontal
curves and all other horizontal curves are in accordance with the speed and
design characteristics of the haulage equipment.
Prior to disturbance for haulroad construction and as an integral part of our
overall reclamation program, vegetation and topsoil are removed from the areas to
be affected. Topsoil is removed from an area wide enough for the roadbed,
shoulders, ditches and sideslopes. The topsoil is either stockpiled or placed
directly on regraded spoils (refer to Section 3.2).
Road cuts are made when necessary with side slopes at 1V:>1.59.
•
graded during the normal regrading of the area.
Embankments required for haulroads are located on stable slopes. Roads are
located to avoid excessive embankments when practicable. Prior to placing fill on
the fill area, the topsoil is removed. Any unsuitable materials are removed to
provide a competent foundation. If necessary, the surface of the fill area is
scarified and recompacted to an acceptable density. All embankments located on
hillsides are scarified prior to the placement of fill. This prevents slippage
of the embankment.
Only suitable materials are
At the Trapper Mine, road cuts do not normally occur in competent
rock. A
berm or ditch
is placed at the
top of large cut slopes to divert water away from
the face of them.
Any excess
cut material is taken to an active mining area,
dumped with
the spoils, and
•
graded during the normal regrading of the area.
Embankments required for haulroads are located on stable slopes.
