• When practicable, haulroads are located on the top of ridges. Switchbacks are used in steep topogra-
phy. Road sections containing switchbacks are located between drainages when practicable. Thus
switchbacks tend to 'criss-cross' the ridge lines. Coincident with our reclamation program, the
locations of haulroads are designed to minimize interference with drainage and runoff.
Fords are not used, except temporarily during road construction. When it is necessary to cross a
drainage, proper sized culverts and well -constructed fills are used. Fords of ephemeral streams are
used during periods of no flow. Perennial streams are not forded. When practicable, haulroads are lo-
cated to minimize drainage crossings. Again, all steps taken to control drainage and minimize the
interference of such, by haulroads, are an integral part of our overall reclamation program, including
sedimentation ponds as discussed below.
Haulroads are generally located within the immediate affected areas and always within the proposed
permit area. Runoff from the affected areas is controlled by a network of sedimentation ponds.
Because of this, in most instances, haulroad runoff will drain through sedimentation ponds.
3.7.2.2 Design and Construction
With minor exceptions, grades for haulroads do not exceed ten percent, and the overall grade is ten
• percent or less. When practicable and in most instances, haulroads are designed at eight percent or
less grade. This is true of most Trapper Mine haulroads. If necessary, future haulroads may have
maximum pitch grades up to 15 percent, but the pitch grades exceeding ten percent shall be less than
300 feet per consecutive 1000 feet.
• PR -3 --- 1
3-161 !
