Mining plans call for
the development of as many as four pits depending upon market conditions and all four
could be in varied states of development simultaneously. Three walking draglines and a
truck/loader fleet are the major earthmovers. These primary earthmovers may work
individually or in tandem in any given mining area. This equipment can also be moved
to sequence alternate cuts from pit to pit in effect keeping multiple areas in active
development. Other equipment is used to supplement mining activity as required (see
Table 1, Major Equipment List). The coal seams and surface topography both slope
downward to the north on gradients typically ranging from 8% to 25%, with both
shallower and steeper grades occurring in isolated locations. Cross -slopes of the coal
seams also vary and usually range from 0% to 8%, with both shallower and steeper
cross -slopes occurring in isolated locations.
When warranted, dewatering/depressurization wells are installed to enhance highwall
and spoil bank stability.
