However, the March 13th report assumed that a greater fraction of fine grained soil was <br />available, that processing of the fill would be limited to removing minor amounts of oversize particles, that <br />conventional density tests could be performed to check compaction of the fill, and finally that subdrains needed <br />to be installed to prevent the building of hydrostatic pressures behind the relatively low permeability fill. Given <br />the differing site conditions, Wildcat implemented an alternative approach that took advantage of materials <br />with a high fraction of oversize particles. These oversize particles are angular and consist of strong brecciated <br />sandstone. When placed together, they will tend to exhibit a high angle of internal fraction (Ø), exhibit very <br />little strength loss with increased moisture content, and, because it is highly permeable, essentially precludes <br />the building of hydrostatic pressure within the fill. <br />Recommendations <br />Further work should be performed at the top of the slope where it intersects the Incas access road. The near <br />vertical section at the top of slope should be flatted to match the rest of the slope. We observed several large <br />flat boulders that were exhumed during the removal of old fill from the adjacent Little Deadwood Gulch. On a <br />properly prepared foundation, these boulders could be placed along the outboard edge of the access road and <br />adequately serve as the recommended retaining structure. <br />We further recommend that the planned grading work in Little Deadwood Gulch be performed in a manner that <br />ensures that positive drainage away from the portal is maintained. As described above, the fill material used to <br />construct the embankment is free draining and as such should be provided with positive drainage to ensure that <br />water flows away from the portal and thus does not pond, dam or otherwise buildup within the fill. <br />If you have any questions, please call. <br />Sincerely yours, <br /> <br />J.
