Reclamation Plan
V. DEFINITION OF A NOXIOUS WEED Noxious weeds are non-native
plant species that have been introduced into an environment with few, if any,
natural biological controls, giving them a distinct competitive advantage in
crowding out native plant species. They have the ability to dominate to the
extent that plant diversity and ecosystem integrity arp threatened., Noxious
weeds ate aggressive, spread rapidly, possess a unique ability to reproduce
profusely, and resist control.
VI. FUNDLNG A Noxious Weed Fund,- was.initiated by vote of the Jackson
County Commissioners in 1998. Seed monies.for the fund came via transfers
from the County's General Fund and the Road and Bridge Fund. Funding
does not come through a mil levy. Besides'the annual county contribution,
additional revenues are procured yearly from other land stewardship agencies
having a presence within the county. Grant'monies have been secured and
will be sought as they become available.
VH. CITIZENS ADVISORY WEED BOARD A local advisory board has been
assembled to advise the local governing body,the Jackson County
Commissioners in matters pertaining to weed management. The Board will
have an elected Chairman and Secretary. Weed Board members will be
composed of a majority of private landowners, each having at least forty aches
within the unincorporated sections of the county. Weed board members will
serve in one-year terms. Additional participants because of their interest,
experience, or expertise will be utilized for the betterment of the program such
as agency resource managers, and other local citizens.
VIH. FACETS OF THE PROGRAM
A Weed Education and Awareness Written and visual materials will be
provided to the public to increase residents' ability to manage individual
weed problems.-Colorado State University's Cooperative Extension
Office in Jackson County will be instrumental in the educational facet of
the project. Brenda Brown, Jackson County's Extension Agent continues
to be a big asset to local weed management efforts. Products and services
available for public use include:
1. Brochure highlighting identification, management and control of
common local weeds.
2. Workshop—hands on training in weed ID, management and
control including integration of the cultural,biological,
mechanical, and chemical controls essential to an iriVegsated
approach to weed management.
3. Handout Packets—variety of mitten and visual materials helpful
in any active weed management effort.
