• Page 14: The text indicates that multiple EMPs exist for the Poverty Gulch drainage.
Figure 1-1 appears to show EMP-009a, EMP-009b,EMP-009c, EMP-009d being
associated with this drainage. Are there any other EMPs associated with this drainage
(i.e.,EMP-021,EMP-008a)?
RESPONSE. Yes. It appears the Hydrology Report was not updated to reflect the
EMPs that were designed and installed as part of Amendment 10 activities (i.e.,
EMPs. 021, 022 and 008b and 008c). Please refer to Appendix 10 of Amendment 11,
which includes an updated Storm Water Design Report for both Amendment 11 and
the Chicago Tunnel area. In summary, EMP-09 and EMP-021 were constructed in
2015 to replace the function of EMP-008a, which is expected to be mined out by
roughly 2018. In addition, EMP-022 along with several ditches were added to the
stormwater design to provide a bypass for stormwater around the North Cresson
mine area. These facilities have been designed to be zero discharge with the
terminus pond EMP-009a designed to retain twice the 10 year/24 hour flood volume.
4.1.4.1 Monitoring Program
• Page 14: The text lists one groundwater monitoring well, PGMW-2. Is this well located
outside of the AM-11 permit boundary? Please list all compliance monitoring sites that
are located outside of the proposed AM-11 permit boundary.
RESPONSE. PGMW--2 is located just on the outside of the A-H boundary but on CC&V-
owned property. All compliance monitoring locations have been plotted on a revised Figures
2-1, 2-1 a and 2-1 b, which show location of compliance points with relation to the Amendment
11 permit boundary(See Attachment 2).
4.1.4.3 Discussion
• Page 15: The text states that the (deep)groundwater monitoring well PGMW-2 has shown
dry conditions since installation in 2005. What is the completion and screening depth of
this well?
RESPONSE. The total depth of PGMW-2 is 219 below ground surface (bgs). The
screened interval is 189-219 feet bgs. Water was not encountered during drilling and
since being installed this well has been dry.
• As the operation moves into the North Cresson Mine and the proposed underground mine,
it will become increasingly important to monitor for impact to the Cripple Creek drainage
system. Have you considered installing an alluvial groundwater well to monitor the
shallow groundwater system present in Poverty Gulch?
RESPONSE. Newmont is considering installation of a shallow well within the alluvium in
Poverty Gulch. However, well logs from drilling PGMW-2 indicate no water was
encountered during drilling. Newmont will assess the technical merits of installing a
shallow well in Poverty Gulch and will propose a location and depth as part of a Technical
Revision, if a shallow well is warranted.
4.2—Squaw Gulch
4.2.1 Current Conditions
• Page 15: The text indicates that multiple EMPs may exist in association with this drainage.
On Figure 1-1,two EMPs appear to be located near this drainage, including EMP-008b
and EMP-008c. Are these the only two EMPs associated with this drainage?
