July 13, 2016 C-1981-014/Southfield Mine RDZ
REVEGETATION — Rule 4.15
Vegetative Cover; Timing:
The road to Substation #2 (reclaimed in 2015) is mostly bare of vegetation, and appears to be very similar to the
condition during the June inspection. The substation itself has seen better success with vegetation growth as there
is significant emergent vegetation (including a large number of sweet clover plants). No patches of thistle plants
were seen at the substation or on the road.
At the north end of the spur from road to MW -NW, recent reclamation areas are mostly bare.
SUBSIDENCE — Rule 4.20:
Dr. W. D. Corley (landowner) has indicated that a hole near the repaired subsidence (repaired in 2012, near the
Thompson driveway) has become larger. He indicated that it is the same hole that was inspected in the past, it is
near a large fallen tree, and the coordinates are:
• 38 degrees, 17' 01.73" N
• 105 degrees, 09' 56.10" W.
In the office prior to the inspection, these coordinates were used with Google Earth to create a figure showing the
location of the feature. Using this figure, satellite imagery on an iPhone, and recalling past inspections, the
inspector readily found the location of the feature that is the subject of Dr. Corley's concern. Using a tape
measure, the depth of the largest hole was found to be 24" at the deepest part of the hole, and the surface
dimensions are 36" x 18". Other holes nearby are smaller. The area was walked (approximately a 300 -foot radius
from the hole in question), and no other significant holes were found. The larger hole does not appear to be any
more dangerous to humans or wildlife than the surrounding terrain, which includes many rocks and branches as
well as steep slopes.
ENFORCEMENT ACTIONS/COMPLIANCE
No enforcement actions were initiated as a result of this inspection, nor are any pending.
Number of Partial Inspection this Fiscal Year: 1
Number of Complete Inspections this Fiscal Year: 0
Page 3 of 6
