the foothills, predominantly on the shallow soils of MUs 77 and76. Smaller amounts of the three
communities are found on MUs 12, 13, 32, 55, 57, and/or 58. Of these latter soil types, MU 32 is
characterized by exposed or shallow bedrock in the foothills, as noted above. The other MUs are
the deep, sandy loam soils associated with the lower side slopes, terraces and fans of the
piedmont. Mountain shrubland and especially ponderosa pine woodland are more common near
the base of the foothills than in the foothills themselves. Mountain shrubland occurs on variable
topography, whereas ponderosa pine woodland is largely associated with seasonal streams.
Pinyon juniper woodland is found primarily on hilltops, ridgelines, and south -facing slopes.
Grassland occurs on the flat, gently sloping landform of the piedmont and associated deep, sandy
loam soils, including MUs 12 and 13, which are the same soil type found on slightly different
slopes, and MUs 57 and 58, which are composed exclusively or predominantly by Neville fine
sandy loam. Herbaceous wetland, which occurs as an inclusion in the grassland community, is
found on MU 57.
Riparian woodland follows the streams which predominantly cross the shallow soils of MUs 77
and 76, with a very small amount on MU 57. This community is associated with extreme
topography in the upper reaches of Little Turkey Creek on MU 77, and with hilly and then more
gently sloping terrain on MUs 76 and 57 towards the lower reaches of the creek and its tributary.
