Vegetation Communities and their Relationship to Soil Types and Topography <br />The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) has mapped eight soil map units (MU) on <br />the property (NRCS 2015), as shown in Appendix A, Figure 2. The site soils are also described <br />in Exhibit I. NRCS descriptions of the MUs are provided in Appendix B. Figure 3 provides an <br />overlay of the vegetation communities on soil type and Table 8 summarizes this relationship. <br />Figure 4 provides an overlay of the vegetation communities on topography shown in 40-foot <br />contours and Table 9 summarizes this relationship. Below, the relationship between vegetation <br />community, soil type, and topography is discussed in more detail. <br />The property occupies the rugged foothills of the Rocky Mountains, hilly terrain near the base of <br />the foothills, and flatter, more gently sloping terrain where terraces and alluvial fans have formed <br />below the foothills in the upper reaches of the piedmont. The mapped soils in the foothills (MUs <br />77 and 32) are characterized by a high percentage of exposed bedrock and associated shallow <br />soils. MU 76, which is characterized by fine sandy loam and shallow loam soils, is associated with <br />hilly terrain near the base of the foothills where they grade into the upper reaches of the piedmont. <br />This soil type extends into the fans and terraces of the piedmont in some areas. The predominant <br />soil types on the lower side slopes above the piedmont are MUs 57 and 58, and on the terraces <br />and fans are MUs 12, 13, and 55. All five of these MUs are composed of deep, sandy loams. <br />Montane mixed conifer forest is found exclusively in the foothills on MU 77, which is composed of <br />rock outcrop, gravelly/cobbly sandy loam, or sandy clay loam soils, often with bedrock starting at <br />13-17 inches below the surface. MU 77 is closely related to the extreme topography of the <br />foothills, making it difficult to distinguish the effects of soil type, topography, slope, and aspect on <br />the distribution of the mixed conifer forest. Within MU 77, mixed conifer occurs primarily on steep, <br />north -facing slopes and the slopes above the narrow riparian corridor associated with Little Turkey <br />Creek. <br />Mountain shrubland, pinyon -juniper woodland, and ponderosa pine woodland, which intergrade <br />extensively, are found primarily in the foothills and the less severe topography near the base of <br />Hitch Rack Ranch Quarry Permit Application M-2016-010 <br />July 14, 2016 J-10 <br />
