Tr
ansit Mix Concrete Co.
Riparian woodland is found along the perennial Little Turkey Creek and the downstream portion
of an unnamed seasonal tributary to it that passes through the southern third of the property. This
community is confined to a narrow band along each stream, occupying a total of 22 acres (1%)
on the property. The principal tree species throughout is narrowleaf cottonwood (Populus
angustifolia), with Douglas fir, blue spruce, ponderosa pine, alder (Alnus incana), and river birch
(Betula occidentalis) also important where Little Turkey Creek runs through the foothills. Plains
cottonwood (Populus deltoides) occurs scattered throughout the riparian woodland. Where Little
Turkey Creek passes near the residence area, the introduced Siberian elm (Ulmus pumila)
becomes common. The principal shrub species is bluestem willow (Salix irrorata), with associated
coyote willow (Salix exigua), pin cherry (Prunus pensylvanica), chokecherry, red -osier dogwood
(Corpus sericea), Rocky Mountain maple, rose (Rosa sp.), and highbush cranberry (Viburnum
edulis). Woodbine (Parthenocissus vitacea) forms a dense cover over shrubs and poison ivy
(Toxicodendron rydbergu) is common in some places. After the creek passes out of the foothills,
Gambel oak and three -leaf sumac are common at the top of bank. The often dense shrub layer
results in a generally sparse understory of forbs and grasses in most places. Principal forbs and
grasses vary widely and include cow parsnip (Heracleum maximum), giant hyssop, smooth brome
(Bromus inermis), and redtop bent grass (Agrostis gigantea or A. stolonifera). A fringe of the
introduced green ash (Fraxinus pennsylvanica) occurs around the southern side of the main lake.
Dalmatian toadflax (Linaria dalmatica, occurs along the road that follows Little Turkey Creek in
the foothills. Common teasel (Dipsacus fullonum), Canada thistle, (Cirsium arvense), and bull
thistle (Cirsium vulgare) also occur. Average cover and height estimates for the principal plant
species in this community are provided in Table 4.
Hitch Rack Ranch Quarry Permit Application M-2016-010
July 14, 2016 J-6
