Fish Creek Soil Investigation
The C horizon, if present, has value of 5 or 6 dry, 4 or 5 moist, and chroma of 3 or 4.
• COMPETING SERIES: These are the Adel (MT),(T) Bullbasin (CO), Bullrev (ID), Duff (NV),
Gallatin (MT), Hackwood (NV), (T)Idmon (ID), Karlan (ID), Lamphier (CO), Leavittville (WY),
(T) Lespate (CO), Mundos (WY), Osmund (WY), Pavohroo (ID), Rhone (CO), (T) Secondset
(CO), Strictland (CO), and (T) Taterheap (CO) soils. The Adel, Bullbasin, Bullrey, Duff,
Gallatin, Hackwood, Idmon, Karlan, Lamphier, Leavittville, Mundos, Osmund, Pavohroo,
Rhone, and Taterheap soils lack bedrock above 40 inches. Karlan, Leavittville, Lespate, Mundos,
and Osmund soils have K horizons. Secondset soils have moisture control sections that are moist
for longer cumulative periods when the soil temperature at 20 inches is greater than 41 degrees F.
Strictland soils have clay movement and accumulation in an insipient Bt horizon with clay films
on the peds.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Winevada soils are on plateaus and mountain slopes. Slopes range
from 3 to 70 percent. The soil formed in residuum and colluvium derived from sandstone.
Elevation is 6,500 to 8,500 feet. The mean annual precipitation ranges from 18 to 25 inches.
Mean annual temperature is 37 to 42 degrees F. Frost -free period is 40 to 75 days.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Coutis, Foidel, SRlitro, and
Rhone soils. Coutis, Foidel, and Rhone soils are deep. Splitro soils are shallow to a lithic contact.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; medium to rapid runoff; moderate
permeability.
USE AND VEGETATION: These soils are used for livestock grazing and wildlife habitat.
Native vegetation consist of Letterman needlegrass, slender wheatgrass, mountain brome, elk
sedge, sagebrush, serviceberry, snowberry, and Gambel oak.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: These soils occur in northwestern Colorado. The series is of
moderate extent. Total area is about 11,000 acres.
MLRA OFFICE RESPONSIBLE: Lakewood, Colorado
SERIES ESTABLISHED: BLM Sonoma Planning Unit, Nevada, 1974.
REMARKS: The diagnostic horizons recognized in this pedon are the mollic epipedon - the
zone from 0 to 24 inches, and the lithic contact at 30 inches. The type location and series
responsibility was moved from Nevada to Colorado in 1989.
