Fish Creek Soil Investigation

APPENDIX 3
WINEVADA SERIES
The Winevada series consists of moderately deep, well drained soils formed in residuum and
colluvium derived from sandstone. Winevada soils are on mountain slopes and plateaus. Slopes
range from 3 to 70 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 20 inches and the mean
annual temperature is about 38 degrees F.
TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine-loamy, mixed, superactive Pachic Haplocryolls
TYPICAL PEDON: Winevada fine sandy loam, rangeland. (Colors are for dry soil unless
otherwise noted.)
Al--0 to 4 inches; very dazk grayish brown (lOYR 3/2) fine sandy loam, very dark brown (lOYR
2/2) moist; weak fine granulaz structure; soft, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic;
slightly acid (pH 6.4); cleaz smooth boundary. (4 to 10 inches thick)
AZ--4 to 14 inches; very dazk grayish brown (1 OYR 3/Z) fine sandy Loam, very dazk brown
(1 OYR 2/2) moist; weak medium subangulaz blocky structure; soft, very friable, slightly sticky
and slightly plastic; neutral (pH 6.6); abrupt wavy boundary. (8 to 12 inches thick)
• A3--14 to 24 inches; dark brown (1 OYR 4/3) loam, very dark brown (1 OYR 2/2) moist; moderate
medium subangular blocky structure parting to moderate fine angulaz blocky; soft, friable,
slightly sticky and slightly plastic; neutral (pH 6.6); abrupt wavy boundary. (8 to 12 inches thick)
Cr--24 to 30 inches; fractured soft sandstone. (0 to 7 inches thick)
R--30 inches; fractured hazd sandstone.
TYPE LOCATION: Routt County, Colorado; approximately 8 miles southeast of Hayden,
about 400 feet north and 50 feet east of the southwest corner of Sec. 14, T. 5 N., R. 88 W.;
Latitude: 40 degrees, 23 minutes, 6 seconds N.; Longitude: 107 degrees, 14 minutes, 14 seconds
W.
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The mean annual soil temperature ranges from 39 to 44
degrees F. and the mean summer soil temperature ranges from 56 to 59 degrees F. Depth to the
lithic contact is 20 to 40 inches. The Cr horizon is absent in some pedons. The particle-size
control section averages 18 to 27 percent clay, 15 to 35 percent silt, and 45 to 60 percent sand. It
is commonly a loam, sandy loam, or sandy clay loam. Content of rock fragments ranges from 0 to
30 percent. In some pedons, a thin layer immediately overlying the bedrock contains I S to 35
percent rock fragments. The mollic epipedon is 16 to 30 inches thick. The soil is noncalcazeous
throughout.
The A horizons have a value of 3 or 4 dry, 2 or 3 moist, and chroma of 2 or 3. Reaction is neutral
or slightly acid.
Habitat Management, Inc. A3-15 01/06/04
