Bureau of Land Management
Colorado River Valley Field Office
Minerals Inspection Report
There are currently two mine benches and a third mine bench in development. The lower bench is
approximately 600 feet long,25 feet wide, and 50 feet tall. The second mine bench is approximately 600 feet
long, 12 to 14 feet wide, and 65 feet tall.According to the 1982 Plan of Operations: "Limestone is quarried by
developing benches in the solid rock with the bench height being at least twice the height of the high wall."
This statement does not match what exists on the mine benches.Additionally, according to the 1989 approved
Plan Amendment 1: "Only one quarry bench will be worked at a time. Bench widths will not exceed 60 feet and
the length of the portion being quarried will be approximately 300 feet." CaIX is in the process of building a
road and blasting a new highwall for a third mine bench on the western side of the operation. The third bench
is currently 16 feet wide and 50 feet high.Justin states that upon completion of the third bench, it will be
approximately 20 feet wide. Our walk around the production bench was curtailed due to rain and sleet. I will
visit the operation again to further investigate this area.
I set up two photo points during this visit;one in the middle of the mill bench looking north (Photo 11)and a
second at the eastern edge of the production bench where it intersects the Middle Road (Photo 12).
1 drove away from the operation via the Middle Road and observed ponded water where an unnamed
drainage intersects the road.
Recommended Changes to Operations or Corrective Actions Needed
• Provide secondary containment for the portable diesel tank in the mine equipment yard on the mill
bench.
• CaIX must respond to the BLM as to whether additional items are to be included in the proposed Plan
of Operations Modification.
• Provide consistent requested permitted acreages to DRMS and BLM. Update the proposed Plan of
Operations Modification with the current DRMS permitted area boundary or a proposed increased
permitted area boundary.
• Regrade topsoil stockpile to the 4:1 slope as stated in the 1982 Plan of Operations or update the
proposed Plan of Operations Modification with the current topsoil conditions.
• Redesign the quarry highwall and benches to conform with the 1982 Plan of Operations and 1989 Plan
Amendment 1 or update the proposed Plan of Operations Modification to reflect the current mine
operations.
• Update the signage at the Traver Trail/Transfer Trail junction with the appropriate language.
