Mr.Dustin Czapla
Indian Rock Dump Surface Disturbance and Reclamation
A total of approximately 0.2 acres of previously disturbed and reclaimed ground will be
used during piezometer drilling and completion (Figure 2). Drill cuttings will be spread and
incorporated into the surface waste rock on the Indian Rock Dump at the piezometer
locations. The disturbed areas will be reclaimed once the piezometers are no longer being
used as part of reagent injections and long-term monitoring program associated with the
field testing and full-scale implementation. When warranted, the piezometers will be
plugged in accordance with Rule 16 of the Water Well Construction Rules and disturbed
ground will be re-contoured and revegetated.
Additional Field Activities
The underground mine workings injections, ETC pilot test, and treatment residuals
management program will require staging of water/reagent storage vessels and
conveyance equipment as shown in Figure 2. Specifically:
• The larger-scale underground mine workings injections will use the same
infrastructure established near Piezometer P-11 in 2015, while additional
infrastructure (e.g., tanks, plastic totes, flow meters, pumps, and conveyance
piping) will be staged on the drill pad constructed next to Piezometer P-12 in
2015, requiring no additional surface disturbance.
• The ETC pilot tests will be staged at the end of the road leading to the Tie Camp
Drainage monitoring point (TCC), below the Tie Camp Rock Dump. Pilot test
equipment will include solid-phase media emplaced in up to five drums (55-gallon
or smaller), flow meters, pumps, and conveyance piping. Safe staging/handling
of the equipment will likely require limited clearing of vegetation and leveling of
ground surface along and adjacent to the roadway leading past TCC, consistent
with typical site/road maintenance conducted at the mine site.
• The treatment residuals management equipment (e.g., dosing tanks, plastic
totes, flow meters, pumps, and conveyance piping) will be staged on flat ground
next to Indian Drainage along the side of the road and/or on the bank of the
Sediment Pond. No surface disturbance is anticipated to occur as a result of the
treatment residuals management activities.
Summary
An integral component to establishing a practical, technically achievable and sustainable
LPL is the development of BMPs for uranium load reduction at this high elevation mine
site with limited year-round access. Initial pilot testing in the historical Pinnacle
underground mine workings at the Pitch Reclamation Project was successful at treating
uranium in groundwater, including desired attenuation of the injected phosphate. The
primary goal of the Phase 2 field activities is to achieve measureable uranium load
reduction in downgradient surface water. Based on this goal, expansion of the
underground mine workings treatment using larger-scale phosphate-based injections and
460 West 5o North,Suite 500,Salt Lake City,Utah 84101 TEL:(801)990-3547
