March 29,2016 C-1981-025/North Thompson Creek Mine CCW
pond from the Mine No. 3 pipe has a high iron content(Photo 2). Water entering the Long Pond discharge point
contains significantly less iron than at the water entering the pond(Photo 3). This can be seen from the lack of
rust colored residue at the discharge point when compared to the area around the mine discharge pipes. The
embankments on the Long Pond are well vegetated and stable.
Water was discharging from the Long Pond through the pipe to pond T 1. Pond T 1 was impounding water and
discharging to Pond T2. The embankments of Pond T1 had no indications of instability. Water was flowing from
the T 1 spillway into Pond T2. T2 was holding water at the time of the inspection. The embankments of Pond T2
are well vegetated and stable(Photo 4). Pond T2 was discharging to Pond P9.
Water discharged from Pond T2 is transported through an open ditch to Pond P9. Pond P9 was impounding
enough water to discharge through its primary spillway. The embankments of the pond were stable with no
indications of erosion.
Water discharged from Pond P9 flows through an open ditch to the Refuse Pond(Photo 5). There were no areas
along the ditch that indicated instability. Dead knapweed and thistle were spotted on the cleanings pile along
the ditch. See the Revegetation section for more details.
The Refuse Pond is the last pond in the treatment system. The pond is designed not to discharge. During the
inspection the Refuse Pond was impounding a small amount of water. There was no discharge from the pond.
The embankments are well vegetated and stable.
ROADS—Rule 4.03
Construction 4.03.1(3)/4.03.2(3)
Drainage 4.03.1(4)/4.03.2(4)
Surfacing and Maintenance4.03.1(5) and(6)/4.03.2(5) and(6)
Reclamation 4.03.1(7)/4.03.2(7):
The road left at the mine site was left in place to support the post mining land use. During the inspection
the road was in good condition. There were no ruts or other damage to the road. Knapweed was found near the
main gate, see revegetation section for more details.
Revegetation—Rule 4.15:
Most of the snow pack had melted off by the time of the inspection. Knapweed and thistle were spotted
throughout the site, the weeds appeared to be dead from the previous year's spraying. The ditch from Pond P9 to
the Refuse Pond has an area where the cleanings from the ditch had been placed. This area had dead knapweed
and thistle on it from the previous year(Photo 6). Knapweed was spotted near the main gate. Please keep an eye
on these areas and treat them in accordance with the approved weed control plan.
SIGNS AND MARKERS—Rule 4.02:
The correct signs with the current information were displayed at the entrance to the permit area. The signs
are located to the right of the main gate.
Number of Partial Inspection this Fiscal Year: 0
Number of Complete Inspections this Fiscal Year: 3
Page 3 of 10
