Rock
, and Physical Propetties -
14
Hcoo3
Sinn/IGl051 Bl_ IM05.15, and HCOD7 5
Page
controlled 200,000 -pound capacity load frame. Details concerning the test procedure
and methodology are presented in the following sections.
III. Laboratory Testing of Specimens
3.1 Samole Preparation
Upon completion of the initial phases of photographing, measuring, and marking
the core, the specimens were labeled, pulled from the boxes, wrapped in dud tape, and
placed in plastic bags. The uniaxial specimens were trimmed with a diamond cut-off
saw. The uniaxial specimens were cut with a length to diameter (UD) ratio of between
2.04 and 2.44.
This specimen geometry satisfies ASTM (ASTM D 4543-04) specifications. The
uniaxial specimens were placed in a V -block that is magnetically attached to the bed of
a surface grinder. The specimen ends were ground flat to within 0.001 inch in steps of
0.005 inch, 0.003 inch, 0.001 inch. ASTM (ASTM D 4543-04) recommends that the
specimens be flat within 0.001 inch and that the specimens be perpendicular to within
025° or 1 part in 230 or 0.0043. If the specimen falls within the flatness specification of
0.001 inch, then the perpendicularity requirement is satisfied by default since:
0.001 in. = 0.00025
4.000 in.
The value of 4.000 inches was selected since the specimens have lengths greater than
4.000 inches.
3.2 Testing Procedures
The uniaxial compressive strength specimens were tested using a SATEC,
closed loop, hydraulically driven testing frame. The frame has a 200,000 -pound
capacity and is externally controlled by a computer that is also used for data acquisition.
The tests were run M load control where a prescribed loading rate is entered into the
computer and the SATEC machine loads the specimen at a constant rate through
ultimate failure. A pressure transducer that is incorporated into the hydraulic cylinder of
the testing frame measures specimen load. All test data are backed up daily to an
external hard drive for permanent data storage. The specimen load, cumulative test
time, and the position of the lower platen were automatically recorded on the computer's
hard drive.
