1313 Sherman Street, Room 215
Denver, CO 80203

Interoffice Memorandum

March 3, 2016

From: Leigh Simmons
To: Rob Zuber

Subject: Southfield Mine (Permit No. C-1981-014)
2014 AHR review

You requested that I review the 2014 Annual Hydrology Report for the Southfield Mine:

Compliance with the Surface Water Monitoring Plan

The five monitoring sites on Newlin, Magpie, and Second Alkali Creeks were monitored twice in
2014 (on May 21 and December 11), as required. No flow was recorded at any of the sites on
either occasion, and no samples were taken.
In addition to the required monitoring, supplemental monitoring was reported. The
observations are consistent with the ephemeral nature of the three streams in question, with
flow observed flows of short duration (<24 hours), and only in immediate response to large
precipitation events.

Ponds 4 and 5 treat storm water at the main mine site, and have CDPS 002 and 004 discharge
points associated with them respectively. Neither pond discharged during the reporting year.
Water accumulated to just below the discharge level by the end of August, 2014, following
summer storms, but diminished again subsequently.

Ponds L-1 and L-2 treat storm water at the loadout, and have CDPS 001 and 002 discharge points
associated with them respectively. Neither pond discharged during the reporting year.
Reclamation of both of these ponds began in October and was completed in late November,
2014.

Compliance with the Groundwater Monitoring Plan

The four groundwater monitoring points were monitored twice in 2014 (on May 22 and
December 17), as required. MW-16 and MW-NW were reported as dry on both occasions; the
depth to water was recorded at MW-23 and MW-65, and water quality samples were taken and
analyzed.

1313 Sherman Street, Room 215, Denver, CO 80203P 303.866.3567 F 303.832.8106 http://mining.state.co.us

John W.
