The Saraton-Agua Fria complex is the same soil
type found at the area above the Orchard Valley
Mine crusher area. The torriorthents-rock out-
crop, sandstone complex is also found at the
OVM waste disposal area. Descriptions of these
soil types can be found in the existing ap-
proved permit. For more detailed vegetation
and soils information, refer to the soils and
vegetation appendices in Volumes 9 and 9A of
this permit application.
Rock Slope Portals
As determined by the Soil Conservation Service
in the Soil Survey of Paonia Area, Colorado
(1981), the area of the rock slope portals is
within the margin of the Saraton-Agua Fria com-
plex, 20-50 percent slopes and Torriorthents-
Rock outcrop, sandstone complex soil types.
Undisturbed and potential productivities of
these soils are described as follows:
Saraton-Agua Fria complex, 20 to 50 percent
slopes. Capability subclass VIIs, nonirrigat-
ed. Native vegetation composed of pinyon -juni-
per, shrubs, and grasses. Potential vegetation
is pinyon -juniper with grass understory. Graz-
ing potential is limited for livestock and
wildlife. Browse -grass community provides vi-
tal habitat for mule deer. Recreation poten-
tial is severe to moderate due to slope, and
building site development potential is severe
due to slope and surface stoniness.
Torriorthents-Rock outcrop, sandstone complex.
Capability subclass VIIs, nonirrigated. Adapt-
ed species consist of wheatgrass and ricegrass.
Grazing potential is restricted for livestock.
Soils are best suited for wildlife habitat, and
used as winter range by mule deer. Recreation
potential is moderate due to rock outcrops.
Building site development is not rated for
these soils but considered to be severe. These
