The project is approximately seventeen miles
north of the town of Loma and four miles east of Highway 139. Grand River Institute (GRI) was
contracted by CAM to conduct a Class III inventory to evaluate the presence of cultural resources in the
Area of Potential Effect.
The project area is in the Book Cliffs and is very steep. The only authorized surface disturbance that
would result from granting the lease modification would be the unlikely displacement of the surface due to
subsidence from the coal mining. There are no surface facilities or improvements approved. The BLM
archaeologist evaluated the proposed lease modification area using aerials photographs. Survey was
recommended in section 14 where there are rock ledges on west facing slopes above the tributary drainages
off Munger Creek and in section 23 where there is a slope with what look like benches below a relatively
flat ridge. Based on available information the BLM recommended the survey of approximately 60 acres.
A total of 55 acres was surveyed by GRI. One historic linear site was newly recorded and is described
below. The enclosed report details the results of the survey and the evaluation of eligibility.
