In the future, portions of the quarries may be used to dispose of waste marble either in blocks or
broken marble. This will occur to provide additional WRL space for future operations. The design
of the Jefferson and Washington WRL have sufficient a space for waste marble for at least the next
20-30 years.
3. Mine Facilities and Operation
The mine site is powered by portable generators. They are located near the fuel bunker which is a
cast concrete structure housing double walled steel tanks. Power is run overhead to portals or quarries
where each has a main panel to distribute power into the underground or surface operations.
Generators and fuel tanks are skid mounted and portable. They have not been included in the bond
estimate. The containment structure and potentially the tanks and generators will be left onsite to
support the tourist mine. Electricity will be required for ventilation and lights if underground tours
occur at the tourist mine.
As the Washington WRL is developed, the generators and fuel bunker may be relocated nearer to the
Lincoln Gallery as shown in C-3. The original concrete containment structure will be buried within
the Washington WRL and a new containment structure will be built in the new location as shown in
C-3.
The Lincoln Gallery is ventilated by a fan at the surface drawing air from Tunnel #5. Mine ventilation
is governed by MSHA. Annual reports are filed to update ventilation plans. Once Portal 7 reaches
the main Lincoln Gallery air flow will be changed to address the change in ventilation conditions.
A portable office and shop facilities are located near Portals 5 & 6. These structures are shown on
Maps C-1, C-2, and C-3. All are portable and are not included in the bond estimate. Some of these
structures may remain onsite after reclamation to support the tourist mine.
The former parking lot west of the Franklin pit will be utilized as block storage and parking for
equipment. Some servicing of equipment may also occur in this area due to ease of access. A new
parking lot and turn around will be located north of the mine gate. This is necessary to prevent the
general public from entering an active mine site.
4.
