Figure 5 - Larger blocks being cut on the lower benches. <br />The operator also plans to develop two surface quarries within the permitted area. The Jefferson <br />Quarry and Franklin Quarry are shown on Map C -3. Roads to develop the initial quarries are shown <br />on Map C-2. Both surface quarries will be opened from the crest of the outcrop and progress down. <br />Pit walls have been designed with very high factors of safety to ensure the long term stability of the <br />quarries. Figure 6 shows a similar marble quarry in Carrara Italy, this quarry is hundreds of years <br />old and remains stable. Stability designs are included in Geotechnical Exhibit of this application. <br />Generally the benches are 20' high in the galleries and may exceed that height in the quarries <br />depending on geology.
