(Amec Foster Wheeler) has prepared
this letter to correspond to Ames Construction, Inc. (Ames) submittal T0244-September 22,
2015 Meeting with CC&V and Enclosures Provided, proposing a method to achieve compaction
of fill using alternate equipment.
Compaction of fill on slopes in excess of 2.5H:1V has posed a safety hazard for site personnel
and Amec Foster Wheeler in conjunction with Ames have field tested and outlined a procedure
to achieve compaction on the steep slopes at the Cripple Creek & Victor Squaw Gulch Valley
Leach Facility.
Ames proposed to use an excavator-mounted slope packer (see attached). A field test was
conducted with the following procedure:
• A 3-foot-thick test pad of structural fill material was placed in one lift on flat ground
• A CAT smooth drum vibratory roller was used to compact a section of the test pad
(following the existing method specification of four passes)
• A CAT 330 excavator fitted with the slope packer was used to compact a different
section of the test pad with eight passes of the excavator mounted slope packer
• A nuclear density gauge was used to test the compaction of both sections of the test
pad. The table below summarizes the wet density compaction values for a side by side
comparison of the two methods
CAT Smooth Drum
Vibratory Roller
(4 passes)
(pcf)
CAT Excavator
Slope Packer
(8 passes)
(pcf)
123.3 128.5
124.7 130.6
125.0 127.9
Average 124.3 Average 129.0
