Mr. Crowley
Page 12
December 22, 2015
4. The application states the total project area to be disturbed is 0.25 acres. The applicant has
identified 5 test pits as the only form of disturbance. The test pits account for 0.03 acres of
disturbance. Please provide a description of the disturbance that will account for the other
0.22 acres.
5. Please specify where overburden and topsoil will be stockpiled.
6. Please indicate if it will be necessary to remove trees from the site. If so, specify how the
trees will be put to a beneficial use.
7. Please specify how many test pits will be open at any given time.
8. Please specify how open test pits will be safeguarded to prevent unauthorized entry, e.g.
safety fencing, signage.
9. The application states the topsoil depth does not exceed 12 inches at the proposed
prospecting location. The Division was unable to verify this information through the Natural
Resource Conservation Service Web Soil Survey tool. Please specify the source of this
information, e.g. U.S. Forest Service, publication, personal observation.
10. The description of native vegetation at the proposed prospecting location includes shrubs.
Please explain why shrubs were not included in the seed mix. The Division recommends
including at least one shrub species.
11. The proposed seed mix specifies 10 PLS/acre for each grass species to be planted. This
would result in approximately 700 seeds per square foot. Typical seeding rates will fall
between 20 to 80 seeds per square foot. Applying seed at too high of a rate can inhibit the
establishment of desired grass species. The Division recommends reducing the seeding rate
to 1 PLS/acre for each grass species to be planted.
12. The proposed seed mix lists the following plants which do not correspond to a known grass
species. Presumably, the scientific names of the plants were incorrectly transcribed. The
Division has provided a list of the proposed grass species along with suggestions for known
grass species. Please confirm that the Division's assumptions are accurate:
Proposed Grass Species
Trisectum spiticum
Boute lova gracillis
Elymous clymoides
Suggested Grass Species
Trisetum spicatum (spike trisetum)
Bouteloua gracilis (blue grama)
Elymus elymoides (bottlebrush squirreltail)
