11/20/2015 State.co.us Executive Branch Mail - Fwd: GCC Energy, King Mine Surface Water Facilities
1. Are the sediment ponds lined with compacted clay or other types of liners?
2. If not, then in the absence of any surface discharges, one can assume that water retained in the ponds
either evaporates, is used in the mining operations, or infiltrates from the ponds into the Hay Gulch alluvial
groundwater aquifer. Have there been any studies to determine the infiltration rates from the ponds to the
alluvial aquifer?
3. Can you suggest any reports in the mine's files which document the estimated volumes of water collected in
the ponds on a quarterly or annual basis?
4. Is any of the runoff retained in the ponds used in the mining operations? If so, what volumes are used?
Does GCC have decreed water rights which enable them to put the retained surface runoff to beneficial use?
5. Are evaporative losses from the ponds required to be replaced by approved augmentation plans or substitute
water supply plans? If so, what volumes? What are the sources of the augmentation supplies?
Thank you so much for your attention to my questions. I look forward to your responses.
Yours,
Randy Fischer, P.E.
3007 Moore Lane
Fort Collins, Colorado 80526
970-215-7898
randyfischer@frii.com
https://mail.googl e.com/m ai I/u/0/?ui=2&i k=e29129fcb5&view=pt&search= i nbox&th=15l258ca5b881709&si m l=151258ca5b881709 2/2
