n
The topsoil depth is from 6 to 10 inches throughout the affected area. This dark organic topsoil
will be stripped; the stockpiles will be stored in an inactive portion of the affected area, and they
will be protected from drainage channels until they are needed for reclamation. The topsoil piles
will be protected from contamination by other stored materials. Seeding them with Moffat
County's seed -mix formula will stabilize the topsoil piles, and signs will be placed to identify the
topsoil and to caution against removing it. The crushed road -base stockpiles will be identified,
protected from erosion, and kept separate from other stockpiled materials. Moffat County will
stabilize overburden stockpiles if they are to be stored for more than a year.
In order to prevent disturbing a greater sized permit area, Moffat County will have to store
overburden, topsoil, sand, and crushed road -base in the mined -out portion of our pit. Where it is
practical, we will slope, topsoil and seed the disturbed areas as we go, but experience tells us that
our best reclamation performance is to reclaim the pit after it has been mined -out, and the
stockpiles and equipment have been removed.
From the exploration holes that Moffat County drilled with an auger, in April of 2008, we know
that the average topsoil is very sandy — and that the depth runs from 6" to 10". The overburden
has an average depth of 5.0 feet to the top of the gravel, and the gravel might average from 12 to
16 feet thick. In some places the gravel might be as thin as 7 feet, and then stratified with sand
for 5 feet to the top of a second layer of gravel which might be 8 feet thick. In some holes the
overburden, gravel, and sand lenses combined are around 19 feet deep, usually lying on a 5 ft.
deposit of decomposed sandstone overlaying claystone of unknown thickness.
Smith Pit No. 20 Amendment No. 1— Moffat County Road Department
