The weather had been warm and dry, with an
evening rainstorm occurring the evening of 8/12/2015. SCC had consultants scheduled to conduct vegetation
sampling on reclaimed areas of the mine, with the intent of demonstrating vegetation success. The inspector
observed the vegetation sampling efforts.
AVAILABILITY OF RECORDS — Rule 5.02.4(1):
Records were verified at the Peabody Sage Creek Office. Records form is attached to the end of this
report.
FISH and WILDLIFE — Rule 4.18:
A bear was observed swimming in Pond 9 on 8/12/2015. A mule deer buck was observed browsing in drainage
006-NE4. Cattle are not grazing in the reclaimed areas yet, in anticipation of vegetation sampling. As a result,
more sign of elk bedding down and elk tracks throughout the reclaimed areas was noted. Cattle were observed on
the Ricks property at the southern extent of the permit area. It is believed that these cattle had not been in the area
for very long and the stocking rate appeared low enough that their presence may not impact the vegetation
sampling efforts significantly. One cow/calf pair (white face black cow) was observed grazing by Pond 5. These
were the only cattle along G road and Pond 5 drainage area. A small grey snake was spotted in the Pond 16
emergency spillway (not a rattler).
HYDROLOGIC BALANCE - Rule 4.05
Drainage Control 4.05.1, 4.05.2, 4.05.3; Siltation Structures 4.05.5, 4.05.6; Discharge Structures 4.05.7, 4.05.10;
Diversions 4.05.4; Impoundments 4.05.6, 4.05.9:
Pond 6 held a pool of water and was discharging clear with a low flow. No problems were noted with
Pond 6.
Pond 16 flume has been cleared of sediment. The pond was holding a pool of clear water.
