• Riparian Woodland. This vegetation type occurs at three (3) locations
within the Southfield mine area. The primary Riparian Woodland vegetation
area extends the entire length of the Southfield mine area from west to
east along Newlin Creek as shown on the Mine Area Vegetation Map, (Map
16). A second Riparian Woodland area is located in the southwestern
portion of the mine area, along a streambed as shown on the Mine Area
Vegetation Map, (Map 16). The third Riparian Woodland area is located in
the northeastern portion of the mine area, along another streambed as
shown on the Mine Area Vegetation Map, (Map 16). The Riparian Woodland
vegetation type is characterized by several tree species with narrow leaf
cottonwood, ponderosa pine and wild plum dominating. Other species common
to the Riparian Woodland type include, one-seeded juniper, boulder
raspberry, snowberry, oak brush, common gooseberry and wax current.
Ponderosa Pine-Pinvon-Juniper Woodland. The majority of the Southfield
mine area is occupied by this vegetation type. This vegetation type is
• characterized by dense stands of ponderosa pine on north facing slopes and
dominant stands of one-seeded juniper on east and south facing slopes.
Additional tree species associated with this vegetation type include
pinyon pine which is found throughout the area, oak brush, skunk brush,
mountain mahogany and snowberry. The grass species most commonly
associated with the Ponderosa Pine Pinyon-Juniper Woodland vegetation type
within the Southfield mine area include blue grama, western wheatgrass,
needle and thread, squirrel tail, mutton grass and red three-awn. The
Mine Area Vegetation Map (Map 16), illustrates the occurrence and
distribution of this vegetation type.
Grassland. The Grassland vegetation type typically occurs along the top
of ridges and mesas within the Southfield mine area. These areas are
dominated by blue grama and ring muhli. Numerous other grass species such
as side oats grama, red three-awn, squirrel tail, western wheatgrass, sand
drop seed and little blue stem are common in this vegetation type. Also
present in substantial numbers are forb species including several species
• of cactus, snakeweed and sagebrush. Generally this vegetation type is
also characterized by scattered ponderosa pine, pinyon pine and one-
seeded juniper.
2.04.10-2
