GEOSCIENCE SER VICES Peter Kearl M.S.
April 16, 2015
Carrie Sheata and Tyler Adams
U.S.A.C.O.E.
Sacramento District
400 Rood Avenue, Room 123
Grand Junction, CO 81501
RE: Completion at the United Company Facility on the Colorado River near Rifle Under Permit
SPK -2012-00125
This letter is the final maintenance report for Permit SPK -2012-00125. All of the conditions
listed in the permit have been met for the river structures installed to protect the existing
United Companies pit and the former Chamber pit near Rifle, Colorado. Documentation is
provided for the work discussed in my February 19th letter to include the installation of two
rock sills on the former Chamber pit and repair of the toe wood bench protecting United
Companies pit.
Figures 1 and 2 show the rock sills at the locations provided in the February 19 report. Footer
rocks were used for each sill rock with only the top of the upper rock visible at the surface. The
sills are located perpendicular to the flow direction of the river and are designed to maintain
the existing grade. As discussed in the 2014 and 2015 Annual Monitoring Reports, the owner of
the Chamber pit placed animal pens on the bench that prevented the establishment of
perennial vegetation. The problem of overgrazing by Mrs. Chambers has been an issue
throughout reclamation efforts conducted by United Companies and is documented with the
Colorado Department of Reclamation, Mining and Safety (DRMS).
Damage to the toe -wood bench protecting the United Companies pit was repaired as shown in
Figure 3. Consistent with the original structure design, large rocks were place under the toe
wood and covered with top soil. The area will be seeded with the accepted seed mix as
designated by the DRMS.
This report completes all of the required conditions under Permit SPK -2012-00125. While
United Companies may perform periodic maintenance of the river structures, no further
reports will be submitted.
2263 Kingston Road I Grand Junction, CO 81507 1 (970) 985-9606 1 peter. kearinhotmail.coin
