West Elk Mine 2014 Annual Hydrology Report 47
(field; May 1, 2014) and 734 µmhos/cm (lab; May 21, 2014), compared to the baseline
maximum of 380 µmhos/cm. Laboratory EC was 682 µmhos/cm compared to the
baseline maximum of 462 µmhos/cm. Total iron concentrations were 0.63 mg/L
compared to the baseline maximum 0.07 mg/L. Total dissolved solids (TDS)
concentrations were 440 mg/L compared to the baseline maximum of 260 mg/L.
Data from two sampling rounds (May 21 and September 23, 2014) were collected at
Middle Sylvester Gulch in WY 2014. Five parameters were elevated 10 percent or
higher than the respective maximum baseline values. Chloride concentrations were 20.1
mg/L (May 2014) and 77.7 mg/L (September 2014) compared to the baseline maximum
of 10 mg/L. EC values were 1,210 µmhos/cm (September 2014) compared to the
baseline maximum of 800 µmhos/cm. Sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) values were 3.94
(May 2014) and 5.6 (September 2014) compared to the baseline maximum of 3.02.
Sulfate concentrations were 88.1 mg/L (September 2014) compared to the baseline
maximum of 80 mg/L. TDS concentrations were 690 mg/L (September 2014) compared
to the baseline maximum of 584 mg/L. The elevated concentrations of these parameters
are not believed to be mine related, as there was no MWPF discharge (MCC, 2015).
Data from one sampling round (May 21, 2014) were collected at Lower Sylvester Gulch
in WY 2014. Four parameters were at least 10 percent above the maximum baseline
values for the sample: Field EC was 1,067 µmhos/cm (April 29, 2014) and 880
µmhos/cm (May 21, 2014) compared to the baseline maximum field EC of 700
µmhos/cm. The laboratory EC was 815 µmhos/cm compared to the baseline maximum of
597 µmhos/cm. Total iron concentrations were 0.94 mg/L compared to the baseline
maximum of 0.17 mg/L. TDS concentrations were 500 mg/L compared to the baseline
maximum of 430 mg/L. The elevated concentrations of these parameters are not believed
to be mine related, as there was no MWPF discharge (MCC, 2015).
One laboratory sample (May 19, 2014) was collected at Middle Dry Fork in WY 2014.
Two parameters were at least 10 percent above the maximum baseline values for the
sample: EC (lab) was 137 µmhos/cm compared to the baseline maximum of 76
µmhos/cm. Dissolved iron was 0.22 mg/L compared to the baseline maximum of 0.11
mg/L.
One sample (May 19, 2014) was collected at Upper Dry Fork in WY 2014. Total iron
concentrations were 19.40 mg/L compared to the baseline maximum of 3.64 mg/L. TSS
concentrations were 398 mg/L compared to the baseline maximum of 88 mg/L.
One sample (May 20, 2014) was collected at Lower Gribble Gulch in WY 2014. TDS
concentrations were 520 mg/L compared to the baseline maximum of 60 mg/L.
One sample (May 19, 2014) was collected at East Gulch, East of Horse Gulch in WY
2014. Total iron concentrations were 7.19 mg/L compared to the baseline maximum of
3.59 mg/L. TSS concentrations were 143 mg/L compared to the baseline maximum of 50
mg/L.
One laboratory sample (May 20, 2014) was collected at Upper Deep Creek in WY 2014.
Total iron concentrations were 10.80 mg/L compared to the baseline maximum of 9.43
mg/L. The September 2014 field EC value was 452 µmhos/cm compared to the baseline
maximum of 310 µmhos/cm.
June 2015 HVdroGeo, Inc.
