June 8, 2015 C-1981-046/Sunlight Mine
The soil on the hillside west of the lower adit is loose and unconsolidated but did not have any rills or gullies.
The scale area appeared to be stable. There were no signs of slumping or cracking.
HYDROLOGIC BALANCE - Rule 4.05
Drainage Control 4.05.1, 4.05.2, 4.05.3; Siltation Structures 4.05.5, 4.05.6; Discharge Structures 4.05.7, 4.05.10;
Diversions 4.05.4; Effluent Limits 4.05.2; Ground Water Monitoring 4.05.13; Surface Water Monitoring 4.05.13;
Drainage — Acid and Toxic Materials 4.05.8; Impoundments 4.05.6, 4.05.9; Stream Buffer Zones 4.05.18:
The upper clean water diversion ditch of the upper mine area continues to be blocked by the slumping
hillside above the ditch. A small rill has formed on the upper side of the blockage where the water is forced down
the face of the slope.
The culvert under Hwy 117 for the clean water diversion ditch on the west end of the disturbed area is nearly
clogged (photo 3). The debris in the culvert appears to be from road maintenance.
The culvert under Hwy 117 on the east end that drains into sediment pond 2 is also nearly clogged with debris
(photo 4). The debris appears to be from road maintenance.
Sediment Pond 2 did not contain water. Trees were growing in the bottom of the pond and in the embankment.
The spillway was clear of obstructions.
ROADS — Rule 4.03
Construction 4.03.1(3)/4.03.2(3) Drainage 4.03.1(4)/4.03.2(4) Surfacing and Maintenance4.03.1(5) and
(6)/4.03.2(5) and (6) Reclamation 4.03.1(7)/4.03.2(7):
The access roads to Pond 2 and the lower adit area were well vegetated and appeared to be stable (photos
5 and 6). There were no signs of rills or gullies on the road surface or slopes above and below the roads. There
are also many trees and shrubs growing on the road surfaces.
RECLAMATION SUCCESS - Rule 4.15, Rule 3:
The vegetation looks very good this year. Most likely due to the amount of rainfall during the spring.
Shrubs are the dominant vegetation type on the mine site and of the surrounding area, although they were not
counted in the vegetation sampling survey of 2013 and 2014. The majority of the herbaceous plant species present
are perennial which is consistent with the rangeland post mining land use. Several noxious weed species including
houndstongue, mullein, field bindweed, cheatgrass, Canada thistle, oxeye daisy and absinth wormwood were noted
in the vegetation survey and this inspection. There are no remaining funds for weed treatment.
SIGNS AND MARKERS — Rule 4.02:
The Division's mine identification sign was in place and legible. It remarkably doesn't have bullet holes.
Number of Partial Inspection this Fiscal Year: 1
Number of Complete Inspections this Fiscal Year: 4
Page 3 of 4
