April 28, 2015 C- 1981- 035/King Coal Mine MLT
• The outer slope is covered with soil substitute, which was previously seeded. The lowest
slope is black in appearance, due to fines having blown over from the former stack tube and
pad.
• An area of loose material appeared to have been scaled from the portal highwall. The
Division required that this be done, in order to ensure a firm back surface is present, against
which coal mine waste backfill will one day be placed.
PROCESSING WASTE /COAL MINE WASTE PILES — Rule 4.10 and 4.11
Drainage Control; Surface Stabilization; Placement:
Dumped loads of coal mine waste were present on top of the Refuse Pile and in the
temporary storage area where the tipple once stood. This material awaits permanent
placement in the refuse pile.
REVEGETATION — Rule 4.15
Vegetative Cover; Timing:
According to the Annual Reclamation Report, an area south of the King II Sediment Pond
was seeded in 2008. That area (outlined on Photo 1), appears to be covered with Kochia, and
may be the main source for tumbleweeds that have been found to accumulate at the site in
recent years. Management of this area that was previously disturbed will be important, in
order to achieve success of the revegetation.
AIR RESOURCE PROTECTION — Rule 4.17:
• No fugitive emissions from either the roads or the coal handling equipment were apparent in
the photos.
• The surfaces of the roads at King II appeared to be damp.
Number of Partial Inspection this Fiscal Year: 9
Number of Complete Inspections this Fiscal Year: 4 Page 3 of 8
