5.2 Water Treatment Chemical Reagents
Chemical reagents used in the water treatment process will be stored within or adjacent to the
water treatment building. Primary reagents to be used are calcium hydroxide (lime), sodium
hydroxide, soda ash, sodium EDTA, and hydrochloric acid. Table 1 lists the chemical reagents or
products that are stored and used on site.
5.3 Chemical Reagent Containment
All chemical reagents with the exception of lime, hydrochloric (muriatic) acid, and soda ash will
be stored within the water treatment building on concrete containment. Lime and soda ash are
stored and dispensed from above ground silos located adjacent to the water treatment facility.
Hydrochloric acid is stored in two tanks contained within a concrete storage containment system.
Chemical storage containers for liquid reagents have adequate collection and containment to store
110% of the largest contained vessel.
All bulk and portable reagent containers are clearly marked for contents in accordance with OSHA.
Reagents are stored in well - ventilated areas designed to maintain separation and safe storage of
the chemical reagents. Incompatible reagents such as acids and bases or other specifically reactive
chemicals are stored and dispensed in a manner to prevent accidental contact or mixture. With the
exception -of acids and bases there are no further incompatible materials stored or used in
association with-the water treatment facilities. Emergency showers, eyewashes, and first -aid
stations are available where chemicals are stored and used. Drawing 1 depicts the water treatment
plant and emergency facilities including the eye wash stations and shower.
6.0 OPERATION, MAINTENANCE, AND SAFETY PROCEDURES
6.1 Operating Procedures
Operating procedures are primarily related to on -site handling, movement, and use of water
treatment chemical reagents. Employees involved in this work will be trained on the safe storage,
handling, and disposal of these materials in accordance with BMRI Standard Operating Procedures
(SOPs) and the OSHA Hazard Communication (HazCom) standard. Activities associated with
operation of the water treatment facility include:
ERP and SPCC Plans AES, Inc.
Battle Mountain Resources — San Luis, CO 5 April 2015 (Update)
