April 13, 2015 C- 1981 - 041 /Roadside Portals BFB
Some rocks were placed in front of the culvert leading to the ditch where water entered the mine workings on the
Fontanari property (photo 2). Although water was not running in the ditch at the time of this inspection , it
appears this was an attempt to direct water away from the culvert and toward the Carey Pond. The ditch to the
Carey Pond and the Carey Pond were both dry. The ditch on the Fontanari property was dry and full of
tumbleweeds.
The lower Rapid Creek Ditch was inspected where it crosses Rapid Creek Road by the trailhead parking. Water
was flowing through the culvert but the culvert was nearly full with sediment. This area is outside of the Roadside
permit area but was observed for informational purposes.
The ditches that go through the areas of ponds 6, 10 and 11 were in good condition. The banks of Coal Creek
along ponds 6, 10 and 11 were in good condition (photo 3).
The 6 culverts under the Coal Creek Road by CRDA 1 were free and clear of obstructions. The culverts under
Coal Creek Road that drain CRDA 2 were free and clear of obstructions (photo 4).
The area of the former Pond 13 had good vegetation and appeared to be stable. Ditch D12 appeared to be stable
(photo 5).
RECLAMATION SUCCESS - Rule 4.15, Rule 3:
The vegetation on pond 6 is denser on the west side than on the east side (photo 6). Overall the vegetation
looks good and is starting to re- sprout. Ms. Hammond said that this spring has been really dry.
REVEGETATION — Rule 4.15
Vegetative Cover; Timing:
The grasses planted last October on Pond 8 were starting to germinate. Most of the mulch on Pond 8 was
still in place.
SIGNS AND MARKERS — Rule 4.02:
Mine identification signs were in place at the North Decline, guard shack and two were along the Coal
Creek Road.
Disturbance boundary markers were in place for substation A, substation B and the greasewood reference area.
ENFORCEMENT ACTIONS /COMPLIANCE
No enforcement actions were initiated as a result of this inspection, nor are any pending.
Number of Partial Inspection this Fiscal Year: 8
Number of Complete Inspections this Fiscal Year: 4
Page 3 of 5
