Pitch Reclamation Project Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Board — 2014 Annual Reclamation Report
3. RECLAMATION ACTIVITIES IN 2014
During 2014, primary maintenance and reclamation activities at the Pitch site focused on planting cattails
in the constructed wetlands area downstream from the North Pit lake embankment. Site activities also
included the removal of pine seedlings on the downstream face of the sediment control embankment,
continued spraying of Canadian Thistle and Scentless Chamomile; and planting of 60 Lodge Pole Pine
and 60 Engelman spruce on the 10360 level of the Indian rock dump.
All work was conducted in accordance with applicable conditions in the Radioactive Materials License
(RML) and the Pitch Reclamation Project Procedures Manual. The various reclamation areas discussed
in the following subsections are shown on Figure 2.
3.1 Constructed Wetlands Areas and Adjacent Slopes
Reclamation related activities in 2014 consisted of continued improvements to the constructed wetlands
area near the location of the former Radium Treatment Plant (RTP) and the Indian and Tie Camp
drainages above the Sediment Pond. The RTP was demolished and the area backfilled and recontoured
in 2001, with final grading and initial revegetation in 2002. Reclamation activities have included graded
the steep embankment behind the former RTP site to reduce the slope sloughing, and construction of a
wetland area in the drainage to improved sedimentation control and to stabilize the slope adjacent to and
down gradient from the RTP site. Activities have also included the development of wetland areas above
the Sediment Pond by constructing small dikes in the drainages to allow the creation of small
sedimentation basins, followed by the placement of timber slash in the drainage to retard flow velocity,
and to trap sediment forming a wetlands type condition. Photograph 1 reflects the growth of cattails and
sedges in the wetland area in the drainage near the former RTP site and Photograph 2 shows the
wetlands area above the sediment pond in 2013 and Photograph 3 shows the beaver damage to the
wetland areas above the sediment pond in 2014.
Photograph 1: Wetlands Cattails and Sedge Growth near Area of Old
RTP Site in 2014
Pitch 2014 Reclamation Report 16Apnl2015_Cw.Docx 3
