Keenesburg Mine 2014 Vegetation Monitoring Report
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Quantitative vegetation monitoring of Reclamation Areas 30 and 31 at the Coors Energy
Company (CEC) Keenesburg Mine was conducted in August 2014. Vegetation cover,
herbaceous production, and species composition were evaluated. Comparisons were made
between total vegetation cover and total herbaceous production means from the reclamation
areas and predicted values calculated from the approved final revegetation success equations
based on onsite precipitation from September 2013 to July 2014. The predictive equations for
vegetation cover and herbaceous production were modified in Technical Revisions 43 and 46 to
the Colorado Division of Reclamation Mining and Safety (DRMS) Mining and Reclamation
Permit C- 1981 -028.
The sample mean for total vegetation cover from Reclamation Area 30 (33.8% with noxious
weeds removed) was greater than 90% of the current final revegetation success standard value of
34.7 %. However, Reclamation Area 31 did not meet the standard with only 20.2% mean
vegetation cover. The total herbaceous production standard was 191.3 g /m2. Neither Reclamation
Area met 90% of this standard, with average herbaceous production of 120.0 g /m2 and 101.64
g /m2, respectively. Both site also failed to meet the species composition standard because neither
site had the required component of one cool season grass species contributing greater than 3% of
the relative cover.
Habitat Management, Inc. 1 September 2014
