In a representative profile the surface layer is very dark grayish-brown gravelly sandy <br />loam about 8 inches thick. The subsurface layer is brown very cobbly sandy loam about <br />4 inches t i ek. The s u b s o i I is yellowish brown very cobbly fine sandy loam about 7 <br />inches thick. The sub-stratum is brown very cobbly sandy loam that is several feet <br />thick. The profile is strongly acid throughout. Permeability in these soils is <br />moderately rapid, and the available water capacity is moderate. Effective <br />rooting depth i s 60 inches or more. <br />These soils are in native range that is grazed in summer by sheep, cattle, deer, an d elk. <br />Representative profile of Bross gravelly sandy loam,9 to 45 percent slopes, 6 miles east <br />of Leadville, along the Mosquito Pass road in the mining district, T. 9 S.,R. 79 W., <br />Lake County: <br />02-2 inches to 0, partly decomposed organic mat. <br />A 1 -0 to 8 inches, grayish-brown (I OYR 5/2) gravelly sandy loam; very dark <br />grayish brown (IOYR 3/2) moist; weak, fine, granular structure; slightly <br />hard, very friable, non-sticky; many fine roots; 45 percent gravel and <br />cobbles; strongly acid, clear, smooth boundary. <br />A2-8 to 17 inches, pale-brown (IOYR 6/3) very cobbly sandy loam; brown <br />(IOYR 5/3) moist; weak, thin, platy structure; slightly hard, very <br />friable, non-- sticky; common fine roots; 55 percent cobbles and gravel; <br />strongly acid; clear, wavy boundary. <br />B2-17 to 24 inches, light yellowish-brown (I OYR 6/4) very cobbly fine sandy <br />loam; yellowish-brown (I OYR 6/4) very cobbly fine sandy loam; yellowish <br />brown (IOYR 5/4) moist; weak, medium, sub angular blocky structure; <br />slightly hard, friable, non-sticky; few fine roots; 50 percent cobbles and <br />gravel; strongly acid; clear, smooth boundary. <br />C-24 to 60 inches, pale-brown (IOYR 6/3) very cobbly sandy loam; brown <br />(10YR5/3) moist; massive; slightly hard, friable, non-sticky; 70 percent <br />cobble and gravel; strongly acid. <br />The horizon ranges from very dark brown to brown. Reaction is 5.1 to 5.5. The <br />horizon is yellowish brown to dark yellowish brown. Reaction is 4.5 to 5.5. Depth <br />of parent material is 20 to 30 inches. The average content of gravel and cobbles in the <br />soil profile ranges from 50 to 7 percent.
