NOTE TO FILE
WDID(s): N/A Exempt well
PERMIT NO.: Possibly 28174 or 23312
BY: Jean Lever DATE:
TITLE: _DOM well run dry SHEET: 1 of 2
NOTE:
On Jan 22, the Greeley office got a call from a Luis (no last name) who was calling on behalf of his uncle
Marcos Hernandez. His uncle lives at 160 N 1St Ave Greeley and has a DOM well as the only source of
water for the property. He says that the water level in the well has dropped recently and he can no
longer pump from the well. He thinks the gravel pit to the east may be the problem. This is the Loloff Pit
DRMS Permit M- 1985 -112, WDID 0303012 and aug WDID 0302524.
I researched permits in the area and could not find a permit specific to the 160 N 1St Ave address;
however there are a two older DOM permits that give only the QQ section that could be this well. They
are permit 28174 and permit 23312, both issued in 1965/66 and both describe a 10" diam hole with a 5"
diam casing. Note that the county assessor records the ownership of the property as Palima Maria
DeLourdes. No well permits have been issued recently.
I contacted Tracy Kosloff at the DNR Denver office regarding what a well owner could do if they had
concerns about a neighboring gravel pit. She said that they could submit letters to DNR & DRMS
outlining their concerns. See associated email.
I called Luis and arranged to meet at the property on Friday Jan 23 at noon. At the site visit, Luis said to
me that starting in November 2014 (approx 2 1/2 months earlier) his uncle noted the water level
dropping, and that the well is now dry. His uncle's family is having to truck -in water. The appurtenances
for the well (electric, tank, etc) are located in an in- ground vault on the SE back corner of the house at
527349E, 4475862N. The well is approximately 1500 -ft west of the gravel pit. I was not able to visually
see the actual casing; however the components are well maintained. I asked about the pump and Luis
said his uncle has replaced the pump twice, the last time being not that long ago. Luis said the
landowners to the north have also noted a drop in the water levels in their wells. I asked Luis if his uncle
had anyone look into the physical well and he said no.
I suggested that the first thing his uncle needed to do was to have an inspection of the casing to see if
there was a problem with the structure. From there, I said that the practical solution was to
redrill /rehab the well. I also suggested that his uncle, along with the neighbors with affected wells,
write a letter to DNR /DRMS and to the Loloff pit saying that they were concerned that the de- watering
regime at the pit was affected their wells. I gave Luis the address of DNR and of the Loloff Pit.
Dewatering from the Loloff Pit occurs via pumps on the SW corner of the pit. The water flows into a
channel that runs SE, crosses Balsam Ave and then crosses 81h St at which point it enters a road ditch on
the south side of 8th St.
