CERTIFIED
TBAPPCB KININD INCI
January 19, 2015
P~ IVED
JAN 2 7 2015
Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment Division of Reclamation,
WQCD -PE -132 Mining & Safety
4300 Cherry Creek Dr. South
Denver, CO 80222 -1530
Subject: Fourth Quarter 2014 Colorado Wastewater Discharge Monitoring Reports
Permit No. CO- 0032115
To whom it may concern:
Enclosed are Trapper Mine's Third Quarter 2013 Colorado Wastewater Discharge Monitoring Reports for the period
10/1/14 - 12/31/14. During this quarter, four NPDES outfalls were active. Outfalls 001, 002, Oil and 020 discharged
routinely throughout the quarter. Outfalls 008, 009, 017, 018, 019, 021, 022, 023 and 024 did not discharge during
the quarter. Values reported on the enclosed DMRs represent the maximum (or minimum as applicable)
monthly /daily values generated at each outfall during the quarter.
The TDS is reportable on a quarterly basis per the permit. The TDS values are as follows for each active outfall:
001
002
011
020
3260 mg/L
1860 mg/L
2040 mg/L
1480 mg/L
One exceedance of primary effluent limitations occurred at outfall 011. A value of 97 mg/L for Total Suspended
Solids was reported. On December 9t', 2014 a routine monthly List A -1 sample was taken at each
discharging NPDES site on the mine site. At NPDES site 011 a resultant value of 97.0 mg/L was
recorded for Total Suspended Solids, (TS S). Settleable Solids were recorded at 0.1 mL /L /h.
The reason for the high result is not entirely known. I did notice a slight turbidity to the water as it was
collected. The sample was taken just above the Parshall flume used to record flows at NPDES 011. The
pond system itself had minimal flow, the bulk of the flow at the flume was from East Pyeatt Spring, a
natural spring below the last impoundment of the system. The mine site and region had received a
moderate snowfall of nearly 4inches prior to Thanksgiving on the 24' of November. Temperatures
ranged from 30 to 56 for daytime highs during this period and lows in the high 20's. The snow did
persist for several days, but was mostly gone by the 91, except at higher elevations of the mine site.
The colder weather also appeared to cease the growth of thick patches of water cress present in the
waterway at NPDES 011. Prior to the snow the plants were still mostly green and erect. During
sampling on the 911 noticed the plants had collapsed into the water and turned brown.
Either of the above scenarios may have contributed to the high result either due to lagging snowmelt, or
detritus and debris from the thick vegetative die -off. An animal may have even disturbed the water prior
to sampling, again the exact reason is not known. There were no other issues noted by myself on that
day, or by DBMS inspectors the following day. No industrial activities are known to have occurred
above these ponds such as pit pumping and nearly the entire watershed for NPDES 011 is reclaimed.
The other discharge points sampled that day were clear and exhibited low TSS.
P.O.
