June 2000 s
Energy Fuels Coal, Inc. 1999 Annual Hydrology Report
Monitoring data from Magpie Creek downstream location show increasing levels of calcium,
sulfate, magnesium, iron and total suspended solids downstream as compared to the upstream
location. The quality data indicate that all other parameters were similar at the downstream
and upstream monitoring locations. These data indicate no significant impacts due to mining.
Monitoring data for both upstream and downstream locations is available for, at most, only
2 1/2 years through the period of this report. Additional monitoring will allow better
comparison of data and assessment of potential impacts from mining.
The approved surface water monitoring program effectively monitors the impacts of mining
operations on the surface water system adjacent to the Southfield Mine and loadout site.
Monitoring of two sites on Newlin, Magpie, and Oak Creeks will provide useful data
concerning potential mining impacts. Monitoring data documented through the period of this
report indicate no significant impacts to surface water as a result of mining operations.
Field and laboratory data collected from monitor wells MW -8, MW -10, MW -16, MW -23,
and MW-65 are summarized as described below. All data was collected in compliance with
the approved monitoring program.
Water quality data for wells 10, 16, 23 and 65 are shown on Tables 5, 6, 7 and 8,
respectively. Water quality samples are not obtained at MW-8 as described in the permit
application. As mentioned in previous AHR's, MW -10 was mined - through. Observations
during the period of this report show the well is dry and draining into the mine.
A review of monitoring data for each well through the period of this report indicate that
water quality data are comparable to previous reporting periods.
Water quality in MW -16 showed moderate increases in conductivity, calcium, TDS, chloride,
magnesium, and sulfate compared to average previous values. These changes may be a result
of the large change in well levels observed during the reporting period, described below.
The water quality data at MW -23 indicate consistent parameters for the reporting period as
compared with previous reporting periods.
At MW-65, the data water quality for the reporting period show a moderate increase in the
amount of nitrogen ammonia. All other parameters remained consistent with average previous
values.
Water quality data at the monitoring wells indicate increased values in some parameters as
described above. Additional monitoring will show if any of these changes are sustained
trends. Water quality in all wells remains within acceptable ranges for material damage
criteria.
