establishment.
Not capped Rock placed on flange: requires seal. Slightly sparse vegetation, minor
rilling, needs seed. Site is in a natural drainage, receives more runoff
than other pads.
Not capped Rock placed over flange, which is flush with the ground and filled with
topsoil. Steep pad, sparse veg. Spring at base, likely lubricating small
slip lane. ID tag is missing.
11 -02 ** Not ca ped Filled to surface with soil. Steep stable slope. Mullen.
Seal /Reclaimed Steep stable slope. No casing above ground. Less mullen. Good yarrow,
rasses.
s ` Not capped Steep stable slopes. No OSI. Casing at ground level filled with soil.
Mullen.
Seal /Reclaimed BLM seed mix. Steep and stable slopes. Good aster, yarrow, and rabbit
brush.
Seal /Reclaimed Very steep, great vegetation (Oxbow mix). Rock buttress at bottom
supporting slope.
Signs and Markers (Rule 4.02)
The mine identification sign at the entrance from State Highway 133 is intact and
contained all necessary information in accordance with 4.02.2.
All observed topsoil stockpiles were marked in accordance with 4.02.7. Several long
topsoil stockpiles would benefit from additional markers to ensure proper identification
and protection of the resource.
Sediment Control Measures. (Rule 4.05.5)
Sediment control best management practices (BMPs) throughout the inspected
borehole pad locations range from adequate coverage, improper installation, to
nonexistent.
NOTE: Straw Wattles are designed to function as a sediment barrier /perimeter control
BMP for small drainage areas. Straw wattles and silt fences are designed to pond
surface water run -off and a common misconception is that wattles will filter run -off.
Proper installation and an understanding of design application for this type of BMP are
important to understand. The most appropriate application for this type of BMP, in
regards to functionality, are small drainage areas with sheet flows, flatter grades, and
are generally used in conjunction with other erosion control BMPs.
When using straw wattles for sediment control, they should be 1) installed along the
drainage contour; 2) trenched below grade and backfilled; 3) firmly secured down, and;
4) adequately overlapping.
In the event the straw wattles are flattened by vehicle traffic (cattle grazing in this case)
and overwhelmed with sediment accumulation, they must be replaced to continue to
function as designed.
