Page 2
slopes exceeding 3:1. After scarifying, topsoil should be spread over any disturbed area. The
topsoil should be six to twelve inches thick.
3. Cover crop: After the topsoil has been spread over the areas to be reclaimed, it should be
seeded to a cover crop. The recommendation is to use a sterile or hybrid forage sorghum. This
should be seeded at 3-5 pounds per acre. A warm season sterile sudan may used at a 5-10
pounds per acre seeding rate. Seeding around mid June to mid July has resulted in the best cover
crops. A crop height of two to three feet is adequate. Do not mow the cover crop as this will
make drilling very difficult. Tall cover can be drilled through if it is attached to the soil.
4. Fertilizer: Fertilizer should not be needed if the top soil is re-distributed evenly over the area.
5. Grass seeding: Grass seeding should be done between November 1 and April 30. Seeding
should not be done when the ground is frozen. The seedbed should be firm, moist, and clean of
weeds. Seeding should be in a cover crop of clean, weed free sorghum or sudan.
The following is a recommended seeding mix: (also attached).
Grasses %in mix Seed rate—PLS /lb/ac
Western wheat - Arriba, Barton 15 3.2
Switchgrass - NE 28, Blackwell 30 1.0
Big bluestem - Bison, Kaw, Champ 10 1.10
Yellow Indian— Cheyenne, Holt 15 1.5
Blue grama- Alma, Hachita 10 0.3
Sideoats grama—El Reno,Niner, Vaugh 10 0.9
Alfalfa - Ladak, Ranger 10 0.8
Seeding rates are in Pure Live Seed (PLS). PLS is % of purity X% germination. A grass drill
must be used with depth bands, packer wheels, and seed agitator. The seed should be placed '/
to %2 inch deep.
6. Mulching: A cover crop will be used in place of mulching. If the cover crop fails or
mulching is needed, 4000 pounds per acre of good, clean straw or native grass hay should be
used. The straw or hay should be crimped into the soil.
7. Weed control: Weeds can be controlled by mowing. Mow only if there is a risk of weeds
breaking loose and rolling or tumbling that would cause problems in fences, tree rows ,
homesteads, etc. These would include Russian thistles and kochia. Mowing should be done
before the plants go to seed. The mowing height should be eight to twelve inches to minimize
the scalding/scorching of grass seedlings. Mowing should not be necessary after the second
year. Chemical weed control should be avoided due to both grasses and broadleaf plants in the
mix.
If you need additional information, please call our office.
