Evaluation and Management Recommendations
The trail segment is not eligible under Criteria A and B, associated with events and
lives that have made a significant contribution to the broad pattern of history; or Criterion C, as
it has no distinct elements in the form of design, materials, and workmanship. With the
recording of this second segment, it appears the trail has now been recorded in full, going from
the main road up Stevens Gulch at the west end and traveling along the West Fork of Terror
Creek to its terminus at Terror Creek roughly 2.2 miles to the east. As part of a road system it
appears that this trail does not contribute significantly to the development of the local rural
landscape. Therefore, the trail is field evaluated as not eligible since it is not likely to yield
additional information important to the history (Criterion D) of the area. No further work is
recommended.
Site 5DT1896 is a cow camp, corral and related historic trail. It is located adjacent to
the Stevens Gulch Road where the Stevens Gulch road bends significantly and heads back to
the east. Elevation is between 7900 and 8040 feet. Vegetation is primarily mixed Aspen/Fir
forest. The West Fork of Terror Creek is located approximately 20m south of the site. Soils
are a tan aeolian deposition. Depth is variable, however may be substantial (over lm) and
evidenced by the cutbank of the creek. Ground visibility is approximately 5 -25 %.
The site consists of a subtriangular- shaped corral with the sides measuring between 55-
65 meters in length and that retain evidence of several stages of construction and years of use.
The oldest appears to be a post and rail fence and loading chute which may date as early as
1940 base on the style and method of construction. Nine circular piles of sandstone rocks that
are contained within page fencing anchor a pipe fence on the northeast span of the triangular
corral. The most recent additions are modern metal tube fencing sections that have replaced
parts of the fence in the southwest comer of the corral.
The associated trail is initially a dirt road in the southeast near the corral that
deteriorates into a rugged jeep trail as it extends from the corral northwest up the creek. The
length of the recorded trail segment is approximately 1690' (515m), although it appears to
continue up the mountain slope for some distance. Its width varies, but averages 2.6 to 3m.
The segment appears as a pack trail as indicated on the 1965/1978 Bowie and Gray Reservoir
7.5' Quadrangle Maps. The trail also serves as access to site 5DT.1795.3, the Pitkin Mesa
Domestic Pipeline (aqueduct) and appears to be used regularly for maintenance of the
aqueduct.
Evaluation and Management Recommendations
The corral and trail segment are not associated with historically significant events,
persons, distinctive design/construction, and lack potential to yield additional information
important to the history of the area (Criteria A, B, C and D). Accordingly, the site is field
evaluated as not eligible for listing on the NRHP. No further work is recommended.
29
