project or with previous work and no historic properties were found to be associated with it.
Additionally, is also not included on the early survey plats of the area (GLO from 1891 and
1916), indicating it may be a more modern, used for cattle ranching, hunting or wood cutting.
Evaluation and Management Recommendations
This trail segment is not associated with historically significant events, persons,
distinctive design/construction, and lacks potential to yield additional information important to
the history of the area (Criteria A, B, C and D). Accordingly, it is field evaluated as not
eligible for listing on the NRHP. No further work is recommended.
Site 5DT1826.2, a historic trail, is located along the West Fork of Terror Creek.
Elevation is between 7320 to 7820 feet. Vegetation is oakbrush, aspen, spruce, skunk cabbage,
and mountain grasses and shrubs. Soils are a brown, rocky aeolian loess which may be up to
lm in depth in places based on the cutbank of the creek. Ground visibility is 5 -15% in most
places.
The segment of trail recorded in the project area begins at the north end of 5DT1826.1
and travels north and then west along the West Fork of Terror Creek for roughly 2700m. It
averages 2 -4m in width. No distinct features were noted within this segment however, the trail
serves as access along the creek and as such travels through prehistoric /historic site 5DT90 and
historic 5DT96. This segment of the trail aligns in most places with the one indicated on the
Bowie Quadrangle Map (1965, 1978), and it is in the same relative position as a trail shown on
the 1916 GLO map (Figure 4).
Figure 4.
